At the age of 17, following the death of his adopted father, Emperor Claudius (likely poisoned by his wife, Nero's mother). He was initially seen as a popular and capable ruler, and undertook a number of reforms and public works projects. He also pursued a policy of cultural patronage and was known for his love of the arts, including putting on his own performances as a singer and musician. However, Nero's reign was marked by a number of scandals and controversies. He was accused of murdering his mother, Agrippina, and his first wife, Octavia. He also engaged in a number of extramarital affairs and was known for his extravagant spending and lavish lifestyle.

Nero's rule was further marred by a number of disasters and crises, including a major fire in Rome in 64 AD that destroyed much of the city. Nero was accused of starting the fire himself in order to clear space for a new palace, although the historical accuracy of this claim is disputed. In 68 AD, Nero faced a rebellion by one his military generals, and his own Praetorian Guard turned against him.

Faced with the prospect of being captured and executed, Nero committed suicide. Nero was a controversial figure in Roman history, and his reign was marked by a number of contradictions and inconsistencies. While he was known for his patronage of the arts and his public works projects, he was also notorious for his cruelty and excesses. His legacy has been debated by historians and scholars for centuries.
