Alexander the Great and His Successor Silver Tetradrachm. Beautiful Silver Coin with the profile of Alexander the Great. The coins of Alexander the Great and his successors achieved both a majesty and splendor seldom equaled.

This coinage combined the power of conquest with symbols, beliefs, and artistic tastes. Observe: Diamdemed head of Alexander the Great wearing horn of Ammon. Reverse: Athena holding Nike, Legend on Left, Nike Crowning on right. Lysimachus (reigned 323281 BCE), the general who succeeded Alexander as the ruler of Thrace, used the young rulers portrait on the front of this coin.

However, on the back Lysimachus named himself king and pictured the goddesses Athena and Nike (Victory) crowning his name with laurels, which symbolized victory or honor. Lysimachos was a bodyguard for Alexander the Great. After Alexander's death he obtained the government of Thrace.

He took the title of king in 305 BC and ruled until 281 BC when at the age of 80, he was killed in battle. No two of these coins are exactly alike. Each coin was hand punched which is why so many were struck weakly or off center. This is a beautiful example of a beautiful Alexander Tetradrachm coin.

It is set in a Sterling Silver Bezel with 14k Yellow Gold Prongs and a loop for hanging on a necklace. The coin, without the bezel measures 29.8mm.

Beautiful coin with beautiful sterling and gold settting. Certificate from James H Cohen & Sons, Inc. New Orleans Coin and Weapon shop included.
