Despite having the epithet Philadelphus or "Brother-Loving", Philip's reign saw brother and cousin murder each other in a filial bloodbath that would hastened the end of the once might Seleucid dynasty. His older brother Seleucus VI was killed by his cousin Antiochus X in 95 BCE. He had a brief joint rule with his brother Antiochus XI, who was killed by their younger brother Demetrius III.

He eventually out lasted all his brothers only to be loose his throne to the Armenian king Tigranes II in 83 BCE.
